Understanding the Stages of Labor — A Quick Guide

Mastering the stages of labor is essential for nursing, midwifery, and medical students. Here's a clear, concise breakdown.

Labor is divided into three stages: Stage 1 (Dilation) — begins with regular contractions and ends with full cervical dilation at 10cm. This is further divided into latent phase (0-6cm) and active phase (6-10cm). Nursing role: monitor FHR, cervical dilation, uterine contractions, and provide supportive care. Stage 2 (Expulsion) — from full dilation to delivery of the baby. Average 1-2 hours for primigravida, 30 min for multigravida. Stage 3 (Placental) — from delivery of baby to delivery of placenta. Normal duration: 5-30 minutes. Monitor for PPH! Download our OB/GYN Quick Reference Card from the Free Resources page.
